A World of Funny Changes
More from the fan-curated Sunsquashed Archives — a treasure trove of Yo La Tengo live tapes. This time, we’re taking a look at the fertile Fakebook period, circa 1990-91. Fakebook is now well over two decades old at this point and hasn’t aged a bit — the perfect blend of Georgia and Ira’s vocal harmonies, Dave Schramm’s shimmering electric leads, the gentle-but-not-quite-easy-going vibe … it’s an album that I simply never get tired of. In the months following its release, Yo La Tengo played a bunch of radio sessions and live shows, playing Fakebook’s finest, not to mention plenty of covers that never made it to the studio. YLT has always been extremely tasteful when choosing songs by other artists to include in their repertoire, creating a welcoming world of their own, where the Dixie Cups and NRBQ can co-exist peacefully alongside Amerindie faves like Barbara Manning and Volcano Suns, alongside Yo La’s own re-imagined originals. It’s a world well worth visiting again and again.

made a mix tape for REEKS OF EFFORT, a welsh blog backed by some of the dudes in Joanna Gruesome, back in January.
Check it out here.
cool story about the first song on side A. i was taking a class called Mediated Communication Theory. my professor went to a conference, and instead of canceling the session for that day, he sent over a substitute teacher… which is sort of an odd thing for college. the only time in my four years here at rutgers where that’s happened.
anyways… i had a chance to talk to our substitute professor after class, who informed me he was in a band back in the 90s called Duochrome. Now, we all meet people who say they are in bands, and maybe we listen to their music and maybe we don’t… but listening to Duochrome for the first time was awesome and let me understand something about the power of chance. If you like the first track, look more into Duochrome. I don’t think you will be disappointed.
They released a few 7 inch records, one of which is a tremendous collaboration with My Dad Is Dead. Hunt that one down if you can.
